Técnico students are three-time champions at the Formula Student Portugal competition

FST Lisboa's new electric and autonomous prototype competed in the third edition of Formula Student Portugal competition in Castelo Branco.

The Formula Student (FST Lisboa) team secured nine podium positions in the third edition of the Formula Student Portugal competition. FST14, the new 100% electric and autonomous prototype, won in the Class 1 Electric and Driveless Cup categories, making FST Lisboa three-time champions in both.

Additionally, in this year’s edition, the team won the Engineering Design and Plascore iad special awards in the static events. In the dynamic events, the team won the P1 slidpad and P1 acceleration, Autocross, Endurance and Track Drive awards. Their performance was evaluated by an international panel of judges, which included Formula 1 engineers, aerospace specialists and university professors responsible for the technical evaluation and monitoring of the teams at all stages of the competition.

The competition took place from 27 July to 1 August at the Castelo Branco Motor Sports Park, involving more than 600 students from 29 university teams worldwide.

The FST14 is the most ‘ambitious’ and lightweight car developed to date by the Técnico team. The new version features a redesigned monocoque chassis, an updated aerodynamic package, an advanced suspension system and an optimised autonomous driving pipeline, achieving a top speed of 117 km/h.

Formula Student (FST Lisboa), created in 2001, consists of 61 Técnico students and aims to apply knowledge acquired in their academic context to the development of Formula-type prototypes. In 2024, the team secured first place in both the electric and autonomous vehicle categories of the Portuguese competition, as well as the best times in the SkidPad and Acceleration tests.

Following its successes in Castelo Branco, the FST14 will compete in international events, including Formula Student Spain and Formula Student Germany next month.

Técnico’s association with Formula Student Portugal dates back to its inaugural edition, which took place entirely at Alameda campus and involved the participation of the academic community and several professors. Today, many Técnico alumni are actively involved in organising the event, further strengthening the historical connection between the School and the competition.
