Title: "Turbulence without vortex stretching: from curiosity to drag-reduction"
(Seminar delivered in English Language)

Abstract:

A turbulent flow does, in general, not only advect vortices, but does also stretch them. The question we address in this talk is what happens if the vorticity in a 3D flow is not stretched. We modify the Navier-Stokes equations and study the resulting system using theory and numerical experiments. After fundamental considerations, it is illustrated how this system can help to understand an 80 year old puzzle on drag-reduction.

Short Biographic Note:

Wouter Bos holds a CNRS Research Professor position at the Fluid Mechanics and Acoustics Laboratory (LMFA) of the École Centrale de Lyon, France.
Bos earned his degree in Applied Physics from Delft University, in the Netherlands, in 2001 and completed his Ph.D. on mixing in turbulent flows at the École Centrale de Lyon, in 2005. Afterwards, he served as a postdoctoral researcher in Marseille, France, before joining LMFA as a CNRS Researcher in 2007. He obtained the position of Research Professor in 2023.
Beyond his expertise in turbulence, Bos has diversified his research pursuits, engaging in a broad spectrum of topics, including epidemic modelling, sports analytics, mixing phenomena, nuclear fusion plasmas, statistical mechanics and dynamical systems.

This is another Seminar of the "Seminars@DEM" cycle.
