• Abstract:
The aim of this Seminar is to provide an overview of the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), revealing its expertise in the various areas (with particular emphasis on Airworthiness) as well as an overview of ongoing initiatives related to sustainable aviation in line with the objectives pursued by the European Union (EU) and initiatives related to innovation. A small functional framework of EASA will be provided within the EU system in order to understand how EASA’s established competences have practical reach at the EU level.
• Short Biographic Note:
Luís Pires is an aviation Senior Policy Officer and Airworthiness Expert at EASA with more than 30 years of experience. Born in Luanda and raised in Lisbon, he earned his degree in Mechanical Engineering with specialization in Applied Thermodynamics from IST and two post-graduations in the area of Energy (IST) and Airworthiness (Cranfield University). He started to work as an aviation safety inspector for the Portuguese Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC nowadays, at the time DGAC - General Directorate of Civil Aviation). Currently, and since November 2005, works for EASA where he started in the Standardisation Directorate as Standardisation Team Leader. During his career in aviation participated in several international working groups related to aviation safety regulations. He was also deeply involved in the implementation of Aviation Safety bilateral agreements between EU and USA, EU and Canada, and EU and Brazil. He also has a Private Pilot Licence (PPL).
