Title: "Hybrid additive manufacturing of collector coins"

Abstract:

Since the 7th century BC until today, coin production has played a significant role in our History. Besides being used as exchange medium, coins reflect cultural and political values through their intricate geometric details that convey messages of identity, power and ideology. This is the case of commemorative coins, which are typically manufactured by International Mints according to some of the most demanding production requirements in the entire manufacturing industry, and subsequently introduced into the coin collect market. However, the growing demand for coins of high commercial value places huge demands on conventional manufacturing processes, leading to the necessity for other more advanced alternatives to be developed and implemented. This Seminar aims to present a solution developed by researchers from IST in collaboration with the Portuguese Mint (INCM) for the fabrication of collector coins with a newly proposed hybrid additive manufacturing route. The development was carried out by experimental tests and numerical simulations, and results allow demonstrating and envisioning the potential of hybrid additive manufacturing to obtain high-value coins with geometric details radically different from those currently available in the market.

Short Biographic Note:

João Pragana is an Assistant Professor in the Scientific Area of Manufacturing and Industrial Management of the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DEM) at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST). He obtained his MSc in 2017 and his PhD 2021 both in Mechanical Engineering from IST, where he also served as junior researcher between 2018 and 2020, invited assistant between 2020 and 2023 and invited assistant professor in 2023 in the Scientific Area of Manufacturing and Industrial Management of DEM. At the same time, he was also a collaborative member of IDMEC between 2021 and 2023, becoming later an integrated member in 2024. His research interests are focused in metal forming, joining technologies and hybrid additive manufacturing.

This is another Seminar of the “Seminars@DEM” cycle.
