Date: April 11, 2025, Friday
Time: 3:00 pm
Place: Pavilhão de Mecânica II, amphitheatre AM

Speaker: Haitong Xu (Scientific Area of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering of DEM/IST; CENTEC - Centre for Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering)

Title: "Guidance and control of autonomous ships"
(Seminar delivered in English Language)

Abstract:

Autonomous ships provide new opportunities to the maritime industry by enhancing the safety, economy, and efficiency of ship operations. This Seminar will focus on research on the guidance and control of underactuated Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS). The main research stages and challenges in the development of autonomous navigation control systems for maritime autonomous surface ships will be discussed, and the recent development on rules and regulations of MASS by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will also be briefly addressed. Then, the design and analysis methods of guidance, navigation, and control systems will be discussed. At last, the current research on MASS at the Centre for Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering (CENTEC) will be briefly presented as well.

Short Biographic Note:

Haitong Xu is an Assistant Professor in the Scientific Area of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering of the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DEM) at IST, and until recently, a Postdoc Researcher at the Centre for Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering (CENTEC), holding a Ph.D. degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (IST).
He currently oversees research and collaboration on autonomous ships at CENTEC. His main areas of research are autonomous ships, marine control systems, ship manoeuvring and ship model tests, focusing on Guidance Navigation and Control (GNC), path following control, hydrodynamic coefficient estimation, mathematical manoeuvring models, data acquisition (DAQ) and developing AutoShip prototypes.
Haitong Xu was involved in 7 European and FCT R&D projects and has published 65 scientific papers, including 39 papers in international SCI journals, 5 patents, 21 book chapters and conference papers, and has co-edited 2 books. He is an IEEE member, an editorial board member of the Journal of Marine Science and Application, a guest editor of the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering, a section chairman of the MARTECH and RENEW conference and a peer-reviewer for more than 20 international journals.

This is another Seminar of the “Seminars@DEM” cycle.
Next Seminar, April 28, 2025, Monday, 3:00 pm.
