Title: "Advancing shoulder biomechanics: Insights from computational modeling and simulation"

Abstract:

Shoulder pathologies significantly impact people’s quality of life and bear a significant societal burden due to productivity losses and healthcare utilization. Despite their profound effects, many of these conditions remain poorly understood. The development of novel medical tools is imperative not only for disease management, but also for prevention, promoting healthy lives and well-being across all ages. Computational biomechanical modeling stands as a powerful and attractive tool that has proven its efficacy in providing valuable insights into the human body biomechanics and addressing clinically relevant issues. However, significant work remains to be developed, especially regarding knowledge transfer to effectively address pressing societal challenges. This Seminar offers an overview of biomechanical modeling of the shoulder, covering both multibody and finite element formulations, along with insights into applications and future directions in orthopedics and sports science.

Short Biographic Note:

Carlos Quental concluded his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Lisbon in 2013. During his doctoral studies, he specialized in developing and applying computational tools, using multibody and finite element formulations, to investigate the biomechanics of the shoulder joint. Following the completion of his PhD, he continued his research in computational biomechanics as a post-doctoral researcher at the Institute of Mechanical Engineering (IDMEC). He has authored over 30 papers in peer-reviewed international journals, contributed to 3 book chapters, presented his work in more than 50 national and international conferences, and guest edited two special issues in peer-reviewed international journals. In recognition of his research work, he was honored in 2015 with the Young Researcher Award "Professor João Martins" by the Portuguese Society of Biomechanics (PSB). From 2016 to 2020, he represented the Portuguese Association of Theoretical, Applied and Computational Mechanics (APMTAC) in the Young Researchers Committee of ECCOMAS and served as a member of the Board of Directors of IDMEC. Since May 2023, he has been a member of the PSB council, holding the position of Treasurer. Currently, Carlos Quental serves as an Assistant Professor in the Scientific Area of Structural and Computational Mechanics of the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DEM) at IST and is an integrated researcher of IDMEC.

This is another Seminar of the “Seminars@DEM” cycle.
