Title: "Smart interfaces to enhance transport phenomena at the microscale"

Abstract:

Microscopic phenomena occurring at liquid-solid interfaces govern fluid flow and heat transfer mechanisms in different micro and macro industrial applications, such as in cooling systems to dissipate high heat loads. For instance, surfaces with customized micro/nano modified wetting patterns (reversible depending on the ambient conditions) can play a relevant role in controlling pool and flow boiling heat transfer. However, the efficient development of such systems depends on the accurate understanding and control of the governing mechanisms. This is particularly relevant in microscale applications. This Seminar introduces a micro-to-macro scale approach for the development of cooling systems for industrial applications, with particular focus on microscale applications. The methodology proposed here is introduced in the context of various projects currently running in IST, mostly involving automotive industry and renewable energy production.

Short Biographic Note:

Ana Moita, Diploma Engineer in Mechanical Engineering in 2001, MSc in Mechanical Engineering Energy in 2004 and PhD in Mechanical Engineering in 2009, was an assistant professor in the Portuguese Military Academy, between 2020 and 2023, and since February 2023, is an Assistant Professor in the Scientific Area of Thermofluids and Energy Conversion Technologies of the Mechanical Engineering Department (DEM) of IST, in addition to being a researcher affiliated with the Centre for Innovation, Technology and Policy Research (IN+). Ana Moita developed a strong background in wettability modification strategies, including micro-and-nanostructuring techniques applied to surface modification. In the last years, she has deepened these activities for microscale applications, towards devising microfluidic devices for thermal (energy conversion) and biomedical applications. Principal Investigator (PI)/co-PI of several national and international projects, she is the current Director of the Laboratory of Thermofluids, Combustion and Energy Systems in IN+/IST. Ana Moita has been an invited lecturer for seminars in several international and national universities. Ana Moita received 5 awards/distinctions. She is a reviewer for numerous international conferences, more than 9 journals and 5 funding agencies (including ESA), being part of the scientific and/or technical committee of more than 16 international conferences/workshops. Ana Moita published 7 book chapters, nearly 90 peer reviewed journal papers, and more than 120 conference papers. She is Guest-Editor in 3 journals and part of the Editorial Board of Experimental Thermal and Fluid Science, Elsevier.

This is another Seminar of the “Seminars@DEM” cycle.
