DEM is pleased to announce a new Seminar @ DEM.

Speaker: João Ventura (Assistant professor, retired, DEM; IN+)

Title: “After retirement. A personal experience in science communication/dissemination and other activities”.

Abstract: The author will talk about his life after retirement, in particular his experience as a Master’s student in Science Communication. His activities as a writer of speculative fiction, member of an amateur choir and traveller will also be mentioned.

João Ventura is a mechanical engineer from IST, and he did his MSc and PhD in Combustion at Sheffield University, UK. He started teaching at IST in 1971, as monitor of the newly created course Introduction to Computers and Programming, he was teaching assistant of Automatic Calculus and then moved to the area of Applied Thermodynamics, where, until his retirement in December 2011, he taught and was responsible for about 20 undergraduate and master courses, with emphasis on Thermodynamics I (11 times) and Thermodynamics II (19 times), one and the other having between 200 and 300 students enrolled.

More related to his research activity he taught and was responsible for Industrial Safety (Mechanical Eng.) and Natural and Technological Risks (Environmental Eng.).

He did research work in the area of forest fires, urban fires and industrial safety, participating in several national and European projects, in many of them as scientific responsible on behalf of IST. In 2018-19 he did a master's degree in Science Communication at NOVA FCSH.
